What is SilenceRadio.org?
SilenceRadio.org is a listening space dedicated to contemporary creative radio. SilenceRadio.org offers audio pieces from composed work to "rough" material such as an interesting piece of archive or field-recording. Besides, they are not confined to a thematic but are open to any genre (radio-art, documentary, sound poetry, drama, phonography...) as long as they present a creative form by a critical mind (!).
Radio often involves a spoken language and most of the "spoken" audio pieces you will find on SilenceRadio.org are in French. Many international artists have contributed to the project but it still remains primarily a French-speaking web site. By the way, we are not ashamed if we contribute to a non-overwhelmingly English language based Internet!
How does it work?
We gave the name of "pastille" to the small floating round spots: it means "(cough) drop" or "round sticker", or can even mean a kind of short radio collage. Each pastille materializes an audio piece.
They are classified under five categories that correspond more or less to different genres: ici ("here") for the reportages, rough documents and archive; là-bas ("there") for the tales, sound poetry and drama; ouï ("heard") for the soundscapes and field-recordings; ailleurs ("elsewhere") for the long documentary features; etc... ("et cetera") for the collages, mixes and radio-art pieces.
Dossiers ("folders") is a super-category which contains groups of "pastilles" following a same theme or topic.
We use colours to break with a tight classification by genres. Colours represent the "pastille's" mood: red for anger, green for hope, dark brown for mystery, etc.
Are you ready to listen? Click the "pastille", and a short descriptive text will appear on the right side. Click écouter to listen to the audio piece online.
Click télécharger to download the audio file to your hard disk. Each "pastille" is either licenced under a Creative Commons 2.0 Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs licence, or is strictly reserved for your private use. Click the L button under the "pastille's" text to make the licence appear.
We put new "pastilles" online every season. To subscribe to our podcasts, click the RSS 2.0 button or enter the following URL into your podcasting software: http://www.silenceradio.org/rss.php. If you need a podcasting software, click here.
I can't or I don't want to use the flash plug-in...
SilenceRadio.org also exists in a simplified version, accessible to every person who cannot or does not want to use the Macromedia flash plug-in. Simply click html / wai to switch to the other part of the website.
